As part of the ongoing effort to keep the community informed about Halton Recycling Ltd.’s Newmarket Facility and in response to odour issues, HRL is providing background information on its extensive effort to eliminate odours from the facility. Featured documents include equipment upgrade photos, up-to-date Remedial Action Plans, Public Liaison Committee Meeting Minutes, relevant Technical Reports, and a weekly Complaint Tracking Log.


  • Equipment Upgrades
Bio-Filter Expansion

Biofilter expansion meets 3 to 4 air exchanges per hour at the Process Building and 60 sec EBRT.
Activated Carbon Filter Vessels

One of five activated carbon filters to be used as secondary odour control to further reduce emissions and as back-up odour control units.

Wood Chips Building

The completed wood chip storage cover reduces fugitive odour emissions from the wood chip pile.
Bio-Filter Fan / Variable Frequency Drive

Installation of 2nd Exhaust Fan, 200 HP VFA Controlled assures constant strong negative pressures at the Process Building.
Maturation Tanks with Enclosed Conveyance

The maturation tanks control odour by allowing more air to tumble with the pre-compost, which increases the temperature, eliminating odour causing bacteria.
